MG ZS EV verdict

The MG ZS EV remains one of the best-value EVs on the market, with its appeal being significantly boosted by its updated styling and Long Range version. Sure, it’s not the most exhilarating car to drive, and interior quality doesn’t match that of its rivals from KiaHyundai or Peugeot, but the ZS EV undercuts them all on price and is one of the more practical small electric SUVs around. All-in-all, the ZS EV is a seriously compelling package for any budget-minded driver looking to switch to electric power.

Range details, specs and alternatives

The MG ZS EV was the SAIC-owned brand’s first electric car, and it marked the beginning of its continuing transition towards budget-friendly zero-emission motoring. Following on from the ZS EV’s arrival in 2019, we’ve also seen the MG4, MG5 and MG Cyberster make their respective debuts. MG’s oldest and largest EV still offers plenty of appeal, though, particularly when it comes down to the price.

This small SUV has consistently managed to undercut the prices of many key rivals including the Hyundai Kona ElectricKia Niro EVPeugeot E-2008 and Vauxhall Mokka Electric, while providing similar practicality and standard equipment. For 2022, MG gave the car a facelift, tweaking the styling, updating the infotainment and introducing a Long Range version, with a range of up to 273 miles.

The 110-mile bump in range over the previous model is thanks to a significantly larger battery. The pre-facelift model used a 44.5kWh unit, while the Long Range version of the refreshed ZS EV gets a much bigger 72.6kWh pack. In early 2022, MG also introduced an entry-level Standard Range car, which offers a 198-mile range while starting at around £30,500. Both cost a chunk more than the standard petrol-powered MG ZS, but are good value for an electric SUV nonetheless.

In both standard and long-range forms, the ZS EV is available in two trim levels: SE and Trophy. The SE is our pick of the lineup as it comes loaded with standard equipment including LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry, vehicle-to-load charging, a 360-degree parking camera and a 10.1-inch central touchscreen. Every model also comes with a suite of driver assistance systems called ‘MG Pilot’, which includes lane-keeping assistance, lane-departure warning, traffic-jam assist and high-beam assist.

Pricier Trophy-spec models build on that, adding a panoramic sunroof, ‘leather-style’ upholstery, roof rails, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat and wireless phone charging. There was a Trophy Connect trim level on the price list for a brief time too, but it only got some extra live services on the infotainment, including weather, traffic and Amazon Prime.
