While the ride quality isn’t on par with the rest of the Golf range, there are no such compromises when it comes to the fit, finish and equipment inside. To all intents and purposes, the e-Golf is just like any other upmarket Golf model.

Volkswagen e-Golf dashboard

The e-Golf dashboard and control layout is almost identical to that in other top-end Golf models, which means you can choose the excellent Active Information Display screen instead of traditional analogue instruments.

It’s even more useful than usual in the e-Golf, as you can configure it to show battery range and other info that helps you drive efficiently. In the centre of the dashboard, there’s a big 9.2-inch touchscreen for the sat nav and infotainment functions, while an automatic-style drive controller looks familiar, too.

Equipment, options and accessories

There’s only one e-Golf model, and no optional trim levels to complicate your purchase. Fortunately, the car comes with all the features of a top-line Golf and feels luxuriously appointed as a result.

Exterior features include aero-styled alloy wheels and body-coloured bumpers, door handles and mirrors, along with LED lights all round. Inside, there’s an array of technology, including Volkswagen's Discover Pro DVD navigation and radio system with gesture control, plus Car-Net App-Connect (which combines the functionality of Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink for suitable smartphones).

Unfortunately, these only work via a USB cable unless you opt for a pricey upgrade to wireless technology. There’s also Adaptive Cruise Control with autonomous emergency braking, parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, height-adjustable front seats and electric mirrors with kerb view.

Worthwhile options include the Active Info Display instrument pack, and the Lane Assist Plus package, with features including traffic-jam assistance, rear cross-traffic alert and traffic sign display.

Infotainment, apps & sat nav

The standard Discover Pro infotainment system is packed with features and uses intuitive navigation menus, although the gesture control function seems a bit gimmicky and not very useful. It’s disappointing to have to pay over £400 for wireless smartphone connectivity, too.
