New Genesis electric coupe-SUV spotted testing
Hyundai luxury spinoff brand’s latest electric car shares underpinnings with Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6; expected to enter production later in 2021
The latest electric coupe-SUV is on the way, this time from fledging luxury brand Genesis. Codenamed the JW, Hyundai’s luxury brand’s new electric model will take on the likes of the Tesla Model Y, Audi Q4 e-tron and top-spec versions of the Ford Mustang Mach-E when it enters production later in 2021.
Genesis hasn’t released any details about the powertrain, battery or range of the JW, but it's likely to offer a similar line-up of battery and motor options as its Kia and Hyundai sister models. They both feature 800v charging – allowing a top up from 10-80% in just 18 minutes from a 350kW ultra-rapid charger. The Genesis should be capable of over 300 miles on a single charge in top-spec form and is likely to offer a choice of rear or four-wheel-drive.
But while it will have a lot in common with its Kia and Hyundai counterparts, we can also expect the production version of the JW to be more luxurious and upmarket-feeling than those cars, as it aims to compete with rivals from Tesla, Mercedes, Audi, BMW and potentially even Porsche.
Genesis is entering the UK market this summer, with the promise of three electric models going on sale within 12 months of its arrival. The first of these will be the Electrified G80 luxury saloon, while an electric version of its G70 SUV is also likely. The JW is expected to complete the trio.
