The latest Yaris is shorter than the car it replaced by around 50mm, but a longer wheelbase has opened up the car's interior. It's best enjoyed by front-seat occupants, who get plenty of head, shoulder and leg room, while the car's driving position is good, too. Overall, a Ford Fiesta or Volkswagen Polo will be more versatile, but the Yaris does a good job of balancing useful packaging with compact exterior dimensions.

Toyota Yaris Hybrid interior space, storage & comfort

There's enough space for four adults to get comfortable in the Yaris: the rear seats are fairly spacious, but taller people may have issues with headroom. Practical features in the cabin include a standard front centre armrest and a pair of cupholders, along with a seatback pocket and a pair of rear coat hooks. It's worth noting that height adjustment for the driver and passenger seats isn't standard until mid-range Dynamic.

Other standard nods to convenience include heated door mirrors, follow-me-home headlights and an electronic parking brake. A range of optional plastic protection plates is offered to shield your Yaris' paintwork from supermarket car-park dings.

Boot space

The Yaris is smaller than a number of rivals and has a slightly smaller boot than the Renault Clio: 281 litres versus 300. However, the load area is a good shape and access is easy enough. Fold the seats down (60:40 split) and there's a total of 1,146 litres – significantly shy of the Clio's 1,069 litres.
