New Renault Kangoo E-TECH electric van: pictures, specs and on-sale date

The latest Renault Kangoo small van has been unveiled, with a fully electric version once again part of the range

Renault has revealed further details of the next generation of its popular Kangoo small van, which will go on sale in the UK from June 2021. It has also confirmed that there'll be an E-TECH pure-electric version, as was the case with the outgoing model, which was badged 'Z.E.'

For this new generation, the electric Kangoo is getting a battery upgrade, from 35kWh in the old model to 44kWh here. Renault says that should be sufficient for a driving range of nearly 160 miles on a charge. Maximum charging speed is 75kW, which is enough for an 80% top-up from a public point in just over 40 minutes. Charging from an 11kW domestic or commercial wallbox will take four-and-a-half hours.

As before, the Kangoo E-TECH is being offered in standard and Maxi body lengths, as well as in crew van format. The standard version offers up 3.3 cubic metres of cargo volume and a three-metre load length, while the Maxi expands this to 3.9 cubic metres volume and a 3.55-metre load length; it can also take one-tonne payload.

Elsewhere, all versions of the new Kangoo feature a new pillarless sliding door system that Renault calls 'Open Sesame' (pictured above). The door locks to the driver's cabin door, eliminating the need for a B-pillar and allowing longer items to be loaded in tight spaces where the rear doors can't be opened fully. The Open Sesame system won't be offered in right-hand-drive markets, however.

Inside, there'll be "significant advances in infotainment and driver assistance systems" along with "a high level of standard equipment and new materials throughout".  A new multimedia system will incorporate a suite of driver aids, including a digital rear-view mirror. Automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, crosswind assistance, trailer stability control and adaptive cruise control with traffic assistance will all be available.
