Electric Ford Tourneo Custom teased ahead of 9 May debut
Ford's electric van line-up will feature five models by 2024, including a zero-emissions version of the Transit Custom
Ford has announced its second electric van will be unveiled on 9 May 2022, following the launch of the larger E-Transit earlier this year. The new model is likely to be an electric version of the next-generation Tourneo Custom minibus, based on the new headlight design previously revealed in a teaser image of Ford’s future EV line-up.
The E-Tourneo Custom, as it’s expected to be called, also gives us our first look at the upcoming E-Transit Custom. The Tourneo Custom is, in effect, an MPV minibus version of the hugely popular, mid-size panel van.
Technical details about the electric Tourneo Custom and Transit Custom are thin on the ground at the moment, aside from the fact they’ll be offered alongside mild-hybrid diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains. They may however share some of the same key components with the larger E-Transit.
For example, the E-Transit features a 68kWh battery for a range of up to 196 miles, but due to their smaller size, we expect the Tourneo Custom and Transit Custom EVs to travel further on a charge if they used the same unit. For reference, the Vauxhall Vivaro-e and Fiat E-Scudo vans can cover just over 200 miles when equipped with a 75kWh battery, meaning the Fords would be competitive in this regard if true.
The E-Transit’s 115kW rapid-charging capability may also be carried over to the Tourneo Custom and Transit Custom. It allows for a 15-80% top up in just over half an hour from a fast enough rapid charger. The E-Transit comes with a choice of power outputs for its single electric motor – 181bhp or 265bhp – with both versions producing 430Nm of torque.
When announcing the new model’s debut date, Ford said: “The new announcement will mark the next key milestone on the road to zero emissions for all Ford vehicle sales in Europe and carbon neutrality across its European footprint of facilities, logistics and suppliers by 2035.”
By 2024, Ford will offer fully electric versions of its entire commercial van and minibus range, including the compact Transit Courier and Tourneo Courier. By that time, Ford’s electric-car line-up will also include a Puma EV, an as-yet-unnamed "medium-sized crossover" and a "sports crossover", plus the existing Mustang Mach-E SUV.
