New Alfa Romeo Tonale concept plug-in hybrid revealed
Alfa Romeo has unveiled the Tonale plug-in hybrid SUV at the Geneva Motor Show
The Alfa Romeo Tonale concept has been revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, as the Italian carmaker moves towards plug-in hybrid technology for the first time.
Slotting into the range below the existing Stelvio SUV, the Tonale borrows styling cues from its larger sibling and is built on the same platform as the Jeep Renegade.
No performance details have been released at this stage, although Alfa Romeo is working on a production model to go on sale at a later date.
Sitting on 21-inch wheels, the Tonale concept features a distinctive face, with an overhanging nose and traditional, triangular Alfa Romeo grille in the centre. Slim, three-bulb headlights complete the look.
Meanwhile, an extended bonnet stretches back to the windscreen, with the low roofline curving down towards the rear. The taillights are arranged a single strip – interrupted only by the Alfa Romeo badge – although it’s likely that these will evolve on the production version.
The open wing mirrors are also likely to be redeveloped by the time the car goes on sale.
Inside, there’s room for four passengers, plus a mix of aluminium, leather and Alcantara trim. The driver gets a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and 10.25-inch touchscreen, with driving modes including ‘Normal’, ‘Dual Power’, and ‘Advanced E’. An ‘E-mozionne’ button will allow personalisation of throttle, brake and steering settings.
It’s not known which engines will be offered in the Tonale, although possible options include the petrol engines found in the mechanically similar Fiat 500X. As well as the appeal of hybrid driving, Alfa Romeo will concentrate on making the Tonale one of the best-handling models in the compact SUV class.
In any case, Alfa Romeo says the electric motor will be mounted at the rear in order to achieve the best performance characteristics.
