New Volkswagen ID.5 electric coupe-SUV to debut at 2021 Munich Motor Show
Upcoming coupe version of the Volkswagen ID.4 will debut in high-performance GTX guise at relocated Frankfurt show
Volkswagen has confirmed that the ID.5, the latest addition to its range of electric cars, will be unveiled in partially disguised concept form at the Munich Motor Show in early September. The car will rival other electric coupe-SUVs such as the Polestar 2, Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback and Ford Mustang Mach-E. We've already had the opportunity to drive a prototype version of the ID.5 ahead of its official launch.
The most obvious visual difference between the ID.5 and the more conventional ID.4 is at the rear, where there's a heavily sloped screen and a small spoiler on top of the short bootlid. This does mean the ID.5 will have a reduced load capacity compared to the car it's based on, but the sportier design may attract younger, more style-conscious customers.
The ID.5 will debut in high-performance 'GTX' guise – a setup that has already debuted as the range-topping version of the ID.4 SUV. This comprises an electric motor on both the front and rear axle of the car, giving it four-wheel drive as well as promising "strong driving performance, superior traction and sporty handling," according to VW.
Battery capacity is 77kWh and the manufacturer is projecting a maximum range of 309 miles on a charge for the ID.5 GTX, which is slightly more than the 298 managed by the GTX version of the ID.4 – possibly due to the new model more aerodynamic shape.
It's not clear which of the other ID-model powertrain and trim level options will be offered with the ID.5 bodystyle. The more practical ID.4 starts off with an entry-level, rear-drive, 52kWh battery version, but the ID.5 may skip this more value-orientated setup and concentrate solely on the larger-battery option.
An exact launch date and UK pricing for the ID.5 GTX have yet to be announced, but we expect it’ll be priced slightly higher than the ID.4 GTX's £48,000 starting figure.
