New 2022 Peugeot 308 SW plug-in hybrid estate: prices, specs and on-sale date

Order books are now open for the more practical estate version of the new Peugeot 308; it's available as a plug-in hybrid, with prices starting from £34,200

Peugeot has opened reservations for the new 308 SW: the estate version of the French brand’s family-sized hatchback, available with plug-in hybrid power in both bodystyles. The latest rival to the Renault Megane, SEAT Leon and Ford Focus estates, the new 308 SW will arrive in early 2022, with prices for the electrified models starting from just over £34,000.

Peugeot’s new plug-in hybrid estate is available in four trim levels: Allure, Allure Premium, GT and GT Premium, however, only the less powerful ‘HYBRID 180’ powertrain is available with the Allure and Allure Premium trim (more details on trim levels and prices below).

Of course, interior space is going to be the biggest reason you’re looking at the 308 SW rather than the conventional hatchback. For that, the 308 SW’s wheelbase has been extended by 55mm over the hatchback's, resulting in 129mm more kneeroom for rear-seat passengers, according to Peugeot.

The rear overhang of the 308 SW has also been extended by 210mm, allowing Peugeot to increase the boot space from 410 litres in the hatchback to 608 litres in the estate. The rear bench also folds down in a 40:20:40 split, and when folded flat increases the amount of space on offer to 1,634 litres.

However, it's unclear if the same figures apply to the plug-in hybrid versions of the 308 SW, as we expect the space on offer will be reduced by around 50 litres due to the battery and electric motor, based on the difference between the internal combustion and plug-in hybrid versions of the hatchback.

Staying inside, the 308 SW features the same cabin design as its hatchback counterpart. That includes an angular dashboard design, a 10-inch digital driver’s display for the Peugeot i-Cockpit instrument dials and a 10-inch information touchscreen running Peugeot’s new i-Connect operating system. You also get a choice of three driving modes: Electric, Hybrid and Sport.

All 308 SW models also come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as the new ‘OK Peugeot’ voice control system. Plus, top-spec versions of the 308 SW will be available with semi-autonomous driving systems, including semi-automatic lane change, anticipated speed recommendation and curve speed adoption. That’s on top of other safety systems like adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams and traffic-sign recognition.

Like the 308 hatchback, the 308 SW will be available with a choice of two plug-in hybrid powertrains. The first, less powerful option is the 'HYBRID 180', which combines a 148bhp PureTech petrol engine with a 110bhp electric motor and 12.4kWh battery for a total output of 178bhp. It produces CO2 emissions of 25g/km and in the 308 SW is capable of 37 miles of pure-electric driving.

Above that is the more powerful 'HYBRID 225' powertrain. Here, the PureTech petrol engine alone produces 178bhp, increasing the 308 SW’s total power output to 222bhp from the same motor-and-battery combination. CO2 emissions for this powertrain are 26g/km, with an electric range of 36 miles.

The 308 SW comes as standard with a 3.7kW on-board charger that'll allow you to recharge the car in a little under four hours from a fast enough charger. But if you upgrade to the optional 7.4kW charger, you can take advantage of the maximum charging speed of typical home wallboxes and cut your charging time down to under two hours.

Allure cars get 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors and a 180-degree reversing camera. Step to Allure Premium trim and you get upgraded 17-inch alloys, wireless smartphone charging, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and additional safety features like adaptive cruise control, cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring. Prices for the plug-in hybrid in Allure and Allure Premium spec start from £34,200 and £35,100 respectively.

Above those is the GT trim, where you get the choice of ‘HYBRID 180’ and ‘HYBRID 225’ powertrains. Regardless of which you pick, all 308 SW GTs come with 18-inch alloy wheels, Matrix LED headlights and LED 3D ‘claw effect’ tail-lights. Inside, GT trim also gets Peugeot’s 3D i-Cockpit digital driver’s display, as well as a head-up display, heated steering wheel and the option of a Focal premium sound system. GT trim starts from £37,000 with the ‘HYBRID 180’ powertrain and £38,400 for the more potent powertrain.

Top-of-the-range GT Premium cars are priced from £38,600 with the ‘HYBRID 180’ powertrain and £40,000 for the ‘HYBRID 225’. For that, you get upgraded 18-inch diamond-cut two-tone alloy wheels, an upgraded driver’s seat for added comfort and support, as well as a massage function. The driver's and front passenger's seats are also heated and feature adjustable lumbar support.

GT Premium cars come with Peugeot’s ‘Drive Assist Pack Plus’, which includes semi-autonomous lane-positioning assistance, on top of a 360-degree parking camera view, semi-automatic parking functionality, and a powered tailgate with foot sensors.
