New Hyundai Kona Hybrid announced

Petrol-powered Hyundai Kona Hybrid confirmed, with sales set to begin this summer

A new Hyundai Kona Hybrid SUV will go on sale in August, the South Korean manufacturer has announced.

Featuring a 1.6-litre petrol engine and an electric motor, the ‘full hybrid’ – the name given to non-plug-in vehicles capable of travelling short distances under electric power – is expected to produce 139bhp.

On the Kona Hybrid’s standard 16-inch wheels, this should result in a 0-62mph figure of 11.2 seconds and a top speed of 99mph. CO2 emissions range from 90-99g/km.

Fuel economy is rated at up to 72mpg, with a 1.56kWh battery charged by a combination of the engine and regenerative braking technology. As with most hybrids, the electric range is unlikely to be much more than a mile.

While the exterior is largely unchanged from the Kona Electric, inside, the Kona Hybrid receives its own interior: white accents surround the vents and gearshifter, with black highlights on the doorhandles, steering-wheel spokes and elsewhere.

Standard versions of the Kona Hybrid get black seats lined with woven cloth and white stitching, while higher trims gain a leather trim throughout.

Drivers will be able to hook up their smartphones to the 10.25-inch infotainment system using Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, with wireless charging also included as standard. Meanwhile, remote unlocking is possible with a smartphone app.

Optional features include a head-up display, heated front and rear seats, plus a choice of two new alloy designs: one for the standard 16-inch wheels, and another for the optional 18-inchers.

Hyundai’s SmartSense safety technology includes front collision warning and avoidance assistance with pedestrian and cyclist detection as standard. Lane-keeping assistance and automatic high-beam headlights are also standard.

Smart cruise control, lane-following assistance, speed-limit warnings, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic monitoring are all optional.

With eight paint colours to choose from, customers also get a five-year free subscription to Hyundai LIVE services (providing traffic and weather updates as well as local fuel pricing information) in addition to the company’s unlimited-mileage/five-year warranty.

Prices will be confirmed at a later date.
