New 2022 Citroen C5 X flagship plug-in hybrid crossover: details, specs and pictures
Available as a plug-in hybrid, the new C5 X is promised to offer drivers "ultimate comfort"
This is Citroen’s new comfort-focused crossover flagship model: the C5 X. Arriving in the UK in early 2022, it'll be priced from around £27,000 to £35,000 in plug-in hybrid form.
Citroen has confirmed that the car will be available with the 222bhp plug-in hybrid powertrain we’ve already seen in the C5 Aircross, which offers a maximum electric driving range of 31 miles. While full details remain under wraps, we also expect to see the 1.2-litre, 128bhp three-cylinder petrol engine from the C5 Aircross in the entry-level model.
The C5 X sits on the same mechanical platform as the Aircross, which is also used for larger models in the Stellantis family like the DS 9 and Peugeot 508. But it has been tailored for the C5 X, which at 4,805mm is longer than a 508, but with a slightly shorter wheelbase of 2,785mm.
The plug-in hybrid version of C5 X also boasts 485 litres of boot space with the seats up – 60 litres less than the petrol-only version, and 115 litres than the plug-in C5 Aircross. However, there is a sizeable 1,580-litre load capacity when you fold the rear seats down.
Where the C5 X does stand out is its styling: it features a more elegant grille and LED light design than the more functional-looking C5 Aircross. The long, wide bonnet and sloped rear create a sleek, coupe-like shape, similar to the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Kia EV6 fully electric coupe-SUVs.
However, Citroen does claim the C5 X will have "a passenger compartment worthy of a lounge area" with "unparalleled roominess". Beyond sheer interior space, the car should also feel more comfortable thanks to its Advanced Comfort seats, which feature special padding like a mattress topper. In addition, Advanced Comfort active suspension, which will debut on the plug-in hybrid version, offers three modes to enhance the effectiveness of the Progressive Hydraulic Cushions that are standard on the rest of the range.
The C5 X will also be equipped with an all-new 12-inch high-definition infotainment touchscreen that, like the one in the Citroen e-C4 electric hatchback, has the heating and ventilation controls separated and sitting lower down on the clean, uncluttered dashboard. The infotainment also features over-the-air updates, wireless smartphone charging and phone mirroring. There’s also the option of a 21-inch head-up display and 'Level Two' semi-autonomous driving capability, which blends adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance for added safety.
Exact pricing and equipment will be announced closer to when the C5 X goes on sale in November, but we do know that the Sense Plus, Shine and Shine Plus trim levels from other Citroen models will feature in the line-up. The aforementioned Advanced Comfort active suspension and Advanced Comfort seats will both be standard on plug-in hybrid models.
