The Volvo V90 is one of the bigger cars in the executive estate class, at 4,936mm long and 1,895mm wide. Boot space is unaffected by the hybrid system, but a little passenger room is lost in the back due to the way the system is packaged. The V90 is quite a heavy vehicle, too, tipping the scales at 2,026kg.

Volvo V90 Recharge T6 hybrid interior space, storage & comfort

Despite the hi-tech plug-in hybrid powertrain, the V90 Recharge T6 hybrid doesn’t forget its role as a versatile load-lugger, and it’s a spacious car for four adults, too. Up front, driver and passenger get loads of head and shoulder room, while it’s the same story for passengers in the rear, with the exception of anyone sitting in the middle seat.

The battery pack is integrated into the car’s 'spine' and as such there’s a large tunnel obstructing legroom running down the centre of the floor. The glovebox is decently proportioned, but the door bins could be a little easier to access – they aren’t very deep, and sticking bottles in there isn’t too straightforward given the narrow openings. There’s more space in the centre console, alongside a pair of cup-holders. A parking-ticket holder is affixed on the driver’s side of the windscreen.

Boot space

Unlike a lot of plug-in cars, boot space is unaffected by the hybrid drivetrain compared to conventionally powered V90s. At 560 litres with all seats in place and 1,526 litres with the rear row folded flat, it’s generous enough. However, Volvo is no longer king when it comes to luggage capacity in this class. You’ll find more load space in the Mercedes E-Class Estate, BMW 5 Series Touring or Audi A6 Avant.

The rear bench folds almost completely flat in a 60:40 formation. The cargo bay is illuminated and features underfloor storage, plus an automatic load cover and a cargo divider with a shopping-bag holder. A boot storage net is optional.
