Upcoming Smart #6 will go head-to-head with electric hatchbacks like the VW ID.3

Smart will reveal its new model in 2025, and it's likely to be VW Golf-sized

Smart’s goal of launching a new car every year will see a model named #6 unveiled in 2025, and go on sale the following year.

As you can see in our exclusive image, the #6 will be similar in size to a Volkswagen Golf and the company has strongly hinted it will be a hatchback model to take on the ID.3.

Smart has launched SUVs recently with the #1 and #3, and the #5 is confirmed for 2025. However, the company’s European CEO Dirk Adelmann has stated the #6 will not be an SUV. He said: “We now have three SUVs in the line-up, with #3 being an SUV/Coupé crossover. There is a market besides that bodystyle, and we definitely want to address that – with a hatchback or another body type.”

Adelmann also pointed out that Smart was in a prime position to take advantage of Mercedes ending A-Class production within the next two years. The German giant owns a majority share in Smart.

He commented: “When they (Mercedes) are thinning out their portfolio in the C-segment, Smart is the natural bridge for those customers who will not get a Mercedes in that segment anymore. So they are happy to have us in the showrooms, and we are happy to be the bridge for those customers stepping up from another brand to Smart, then maybe from Smart to Mercedes in the future.”

The #6 is likely to use the same battery and motor set-up as the #3, although this is yet to be confirmed. If it does, this would endow the #6 with 47kWh and 62kWh batteries and power outputs up to 268bhp. A Brabus performance version would also be possible with 422bhp.

Development of the #6 is already in progress and the new car is likely to use parent company Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA). This is already used for the #1 and #3. Replacements for the Smart ForTwo and ForFour models are further away, although the company has reserved the #2 and #4 names for these cars when it can find a suitable partner to build them with, at the right cost.

The #6 will be revealed in the second half of 2025 and is confirmed to go on sale in 2026, but Smart has not given any details on pricing.
