With its attractive MPG and CO2 figures, the Lexus promises to deliver competitive economy and emissions figures when compared to traditional diesel rivals, although increasingly common plug-in hybrid alternatives promise to do much better still.

Lexus ES 300h MPG

The combination of petrol power and electric motor assistance work to good effect in the Lexus, with the promise of more than 50 miles from every gallon of unleaded. Toyota and Lexus long ago decided to rid their line-ups of diesel engines, and have developed more efficient combustion technology for petrol engines. In fact, the company claims its 2.5-litre engine is one of the most thermally efficient engines in a production car.

CO2 emissions

The Lexus ES has official CO2 emissions of between 119 and 128g/km, depending on the exact spec you go for, which is better than many diesel-powered rivals. For instance, an Audi A6 diesel saloon has emissions of over 140g/km. However, the Japanese car is put in the shade in this respect by petrol-electric plug-in hybrid rivals, whose larger batteries and resulting pure-electric driving ranges allow them to record much more impressive CO2 numbers in testing. In the real world, that translates to much more favourable Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) company-car tax rates.
