Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine practicality & boot space

The XC90 T8’s boot isn’t as big as the standard car's, but it should be sufficient for most families; and with seven seats it's very versatile

Passenger space is strong, as the XC90 was designed with a plug-in hybrid version in mind. However, boot space is a little less. Still, the T8 should be a practical family SUV that boosts efficiency thanks to the technology under the stylish body.

The underpinnings the XC90 is based on means packaging is good, so there’s space inside for four comfortably, but even loaded up with five occupants there’s still plenty of room for medium-length journeys. The sixth and seventh seats are a little tighter and will be better served for children or adults on only short journeys.

Leg and headroom are both good in the back, thanks to a high roofline. The seating position is also quite upright, but this allows you to tuck your feet under the seats in front with a comfortable break in your knees. It’s clever use of space that makes the most of the room available – which is plenty.

In the front there’s lots of room, too. The dashboard is high, but the centre console is relatively low, plus there’s good storage. This includes a big tray behind the gearlever, while the door bins are big and the glovebox and central area between the front seats mean there’s plenty of space to store possessions. The seats are also nicely supportive in front, so you’ll feel relatively fresh even after a long journey.

Boot space

There’s decent room inside, as the T8’s battery is stored in the spine of the car, where the driveshaft that supplies the rear wheels with power goes in a regular four-wheel-drive model.

However, the boot space is smaller than in the petrol and diesel models due to the rear-mounted electric motor and its associated electronics. As a result, with all seven seats in place there’s 262 litres compared to 397 litres in a petrol or diesel XC90, while this rises to 640 litres in the T8 if you fold the third row of seats down, which nearly go flat. For reference, in five-seat form a petrol or diesel XC90 has 775 litres of luggage space.

Fold them all down and the XC90 T8 offers 1,816 litres; this compares with 1,951 litres in a standard XC90 in the same configuration, but there’s still more than enough space for most people’s needs.
