Toyota Yaris Hybrid MPG & CO2 emissions
The Toyota Yaris Hybrid is unique among superminis – no other car maker offers such a small car with a combination of petrol and electric power. Combining a 99bhp petrol engine with a 60bhp electric motor and battery pack has an obvious effect on the Yaris' weight, but this heavy hatchback still boasts impressive fuel-economy figures.
Overall economy depends on specification, with efficiency decreasing as alloy wheels get bigger when you ascend the Yaris range hierarchy. Entry-level Yaris Hybrid Active, Icon and Icon Tech models are claimed to manage up to 76.3mpg – better economy than some small diesels. Even the biggest-wheeled models manage 67.3mpg.
By reducing dependency on petrol power, the hybrid system also handily reduces CO2 emissions compared to the regular Yaris. Again, wheel size has a bearing on figures, and entry-level models produce 84g/km of CO2, compared to 96g/km for range-topping cars. This compares to 104g/km for the least polluting pure-petrol Yaris.
Toyota Yaris Hybrid range
Toyota says the Yaris Hybrid can travel for up to 1.2 miles on battery power alone, at up to 30mph. However, its electric motor is intended more to reduce dependency on the petrol engine at low speeds, such as when negotiating stop-start traffic, than to make zero-emissions journeys.
The Toyota Yaris Hybrid uses 'self-charging' hybrid technology, and as such offers no means of home charging or topping up the battery from an external power source. Instead, the system draws its power from the petrol engine, as well as through regenerative braking system. This recovers energy that would otherwise go to waste during deceleration and converts it into power to charge the battery.
Toyota supplies a five-year/100,000-mile warranty for its hybrid systems, including the battery. Every time you have a 'hybrid health check' at a Toyota workshop, (performed as a part of every scheduled service visit), it extends the warranty for another 12 months/10,000 miles, continuing until the car has reached 11 years of age, with no upper mileage limit.
