BMW 530e iPerformance range, MPG, CO2 & charging
The BMW 530e iPerformance will go far enough on electric power to satisfy the average commuter, while its CO2 emissions make for cheap company-car tax. The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine should also deliver reasonable economy of somewhere near 40mpg when it’s in use.

The BMW 530e’s official pure-electric range of 29 miles is roughly on a par with most rival plug-in hybrids such as the Volvo XC60 T8. In real-world use, you’ll more likely see about 20 miles, especially if you venture onto the motorway, although it’s worth mentioning that – like most plug-in hybrids – the BMW offers the option of holding the car’s battery charge until you want to use it.
It’s a good idea to do this on faster roads, when the petrol engine will return its best economy. You can then fall back on the pure-electric ‘Max eDrive’ mode for about-town driving, when petrol consumption will go up if you have the normal combustion engine running, since any combustion engine suffers worse economy in stop-start traffic.
It should be easy to charge the BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid. It uses a standard Type 2 plug (cables for Type 2 and three-pin domestic sockets are included), which will fit the vast majority of public and workplace charge points, and should charge up in less than three hours from any dedicated car charger.
Even a three-pin domestic socket will deliver a charge in around four hours. It’s easy to plug the BMW in, as the charging port is located just ahead of the passenger door, so you won’t have to trail a cable too far in order to connect it.
BMW warranties the batteries in its hybrid cars for six years or 100,000 miles. It also states that it'll replace the batteries if they drop below 70% of the original, as-new performance.
BMW doesn’t currently offer a battery lease program.
