Revamped BMW i4 targets executive EV top spot

BMW’s electric executive car has been given some mild tweaks in order to keep its younger rivals at bay

Spurred on by the revamped Tesla Model 3, the BMW i4 has been treated to a series of upgrades to try and keep it ahead of Elon’s executive car as well as other rivals including the Hyundai Ioniq 6, BYD Seal and Volkswagen ID.7.

Along with some nips and tucks to the exterior styling, the i4 has also been fitted with a revised interior and given some boosts to its quoted battery ranges across the lineup.

Although the exterior styling is still very familiar (particularly those enormous kidney grilles) key changes include new adaptive LED headlights, laser tail lights and a selection of new paint and wheel options.\

Step inside and the updates are a bit more obvious, with BMW’s dual-screen dashboard setup now acting as the centrepiece. This is accompanied by slimmer air vents and a redesigned steering wheel. There are also some new upholstery options to choose from.

The changes aren’t just cosmetic, either, as the eDrive35, eDrive40 and M50 have all received a slight increase to their respective battery ranges. The eDrive35’s 70kWh battery now claims 311 miles, while the larger 81kWh unit found in the other two models claims up to 373 miles in the eDrive40, and 324 miles in the M50.

Pricing for the refreshed BMW i4 line-up will start from £50,365 for the entry-level eDrive35, rising to £69,995 for the high-performance M50. BMW claims that the first cars will arrive in July this year.
