Reliability and safety aren't the most glamorous aspects of any car but are vital considerations for family SUV buyers. The omens are therefore good for the RAV4, which looks set to bolster Toyota's reputation for dependability and also comes with a full suite of the latest active safety systems as standard. Ultimately, the Toyota is about the safest and (if the brand reputation and performance in owner surveys is anything to go by) most reliable car in the class.

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid reliability & problems

Many Toyota buyers choose their car on the strength of the brand's reliability reputation alone, and the RAV4 sticks to the script in this regard. The last time the RAV4 appeared In the Driver Power owner satisfaction survey was in 2021, when it finished 11th out of 75 cars. Toyota itself finished in 10th place overall out of 29 manufacturers in 2022, which was a five-place drop on the year before. Just 16% of respondents reported an issue with their Toyota in the first year of ownership, so reliability seems promising across the board. The RAV4’s 2.5-litre petrol engine, hybrid technology and CVT gearbox have been tried and tested in other Toyota models, while there's also the reassurance of a five-year/100,000-mile warranty should anything actually go wrong.

Safety

The Toyota RAV4 was awarded five stars out of five by independent crash-safety experts Euro NCAP, with individual scores of 93% for adult occupant protection, 87% for child occupant protection and 77% for safety assistance.

Toyota's Safety Sense 2 package is standard across the range. This incorporates adaptive cruise control with lane-departure warning and steering assistance, along with a pre-collision system including pedestrian detection, automatic high beams and road-sign recognition. You also get eight airbags, a tyre pressure warning system and a space-saver tyre under the boot floor.
