Toyota Camry Hybrid boot space & seating

The Toyota Camry Hybrid offers plenty of space and comfort for occupants, but ultimate practicality is compromised by its four-door saloon layout

The Toyota Camry is a car you buy more for its standard kit, low running costs and comfort than for outright load-carrying ability. It's a four-door saloon, so pretty much any large estate or hatchback has it beaten for outright practicality, but it's spacious inside nonetheless.

Space for occupants front and back is generous, and those in the back get a central armrest with two cup holders, although oddly you have to upgrade to top-spec Excel to get front cupholders. Leather upholstery is standard on both trim levels, and wherever you're sitting the Camry is a nicely smooth, quiet and comforting way to travel.

Boot space

The Camry's 524-litre is only slightly smaller than that of a petrol or diesel-engined Volkswagen Passat, but significantly larger than the 383 litres you get in the saloon version of the Ford Mondeo Hybrid.

The Mondeo has the advantage of also being offered in estate form (as is the plug-in version of the Passat), whereas the Camry's practicality is limited by its saloon bodystyle. At least 60:40 split-folding rear seats are standard, so you can carry long, relatively flat items when necessary. Should you need a more practical hybrid family car, Toyota also offers the Highlander SUV, with the same 2.5-litre powertrain as the Camry.
