Ford Mustang Mach-E vs Tesla Model 3: safety and reliability

It’s hard to predict reliability of these new models, but we think electric cars will be more reliable overall than combustion-engined models

Tesla offers a four-year/50,000-mile warranty, while Ford has a three-year/60,000-mile warranty, which is pretty much industry-standard. While Euro NCAP hasn’t crash-tested the Mach-E yet, it does get plenty of safety kit including lane-keeping assistance and lane-departure warning, as well as automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, evasive steering assistance and pre-collision assistance.

The Tesla comes with 'Autopilot' as standard; this can steer, accelerate and brake the car automatically when on the motorway. 'Enhanced Autopilot' costs £3,400, adding traffic merging, automatic lane-changing and low-speed maneuvering with no-one in the car (for example, to back into a tight parking space or garage). The Model 3 scored five out of five stars in its Euro NCAP crash test, with high scores in all four main categories.
