Hot Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer GTX brings the space and the pace

The ID.7 GTX is VW’s new electric flagship. It gets 335bhp and the choice for a hatchback saloon or estate bodystyle

We all love a fast estate car and VW knows this, introducing a new flagship to its electric car line-up in the form of the hot Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer GTX estate.

Also set to arrive in fastback saloon form later this year, the VW ID.7 GTX Tourer will go on sale in the summer, with the key to its performance billing coming in the form of a new dual-electric motor setup. However, while the combined output of the two motors is a hefty 389bhp, VW has limited this to 335bhp in order to preserve the battery and inverter.

This figure may be far less than the near-400bhp output that we originally expected, but despite VW refusing to provide official specs at this stage, the GTX will undoubtedly accelerate faster than the standard ID.7, which reaches 62mph in 6.5 seconds. An optional set of adaptive dampers should make the GTX sportier to drive, too.

Mated to the two motors is a new 86kWh battery pack, which is the largest to be fitted to any VW electric car. We don't have any official WLTP range figures yet, however, Volkswagen says it’s aiming for a maximum of 387 miles between charges for the GTX Tourer. It’s possible that the hatchback could be capable of even more, but both models will get a maximum rapid charging speed of 200kW, with a 10-80% top-up possible in “significantly less than 30 minutes”.

Yet, in true Volkswagen ‘GTX’ fashion, despite the hefty mechanical upgrades, there exists very little on the surface level to distance the hot ID.7 from lesser versions. The ID.7 GTX gets a unique front bumper with additional angular LED daytime running lights, as well as the usual handful of ‘GTX’ badging. Buyers can choose from either black or diamond-cut 20-inch alloys, while a set of larger 21-inch wheels will be made available further down the line.

On the inside, the ID.7 GTX gets black leatherette and microfibre upholstery, with sporty red stitching and piping. There’s also the option of VW’s ‘Smart Glass’ panoramic sunroof, which can be made frosted or transparent at the push of a button.

UK pricing for both the Volkswagen ID.7 GTX Tourer and standard ID.7 GTX (which is yet to be revealed) have not been confirmed at this stage, but we expect both to start from close to £60,000 when they eventually go on sale.
