It may come as something of a shock to read that a car as big and heavy as a Range Rover is capable of over 80mpg, but that’s the beauty of plug-in technology. Mind you, as with any plug-in hybrid, whether you can achieve anything like that economy in everyday use comes down to whether you can make regular use of the car’s 25-mile range on electric power alone.

Still, for this kind of car, it’s still an impressive figure for fuel economy on paper – and no plug-in hybrid rival can seriously improve on it electric-only range. Yes, the likes of the Volvo XC90 T8 quote better economy, but it arguably doesn't quite have the same level of class and prestige as the Range Rover.

And, for a further comparison, bear in mind that the MPG figure makes the PHEV nearly twice as economical as the V6 diesel Range Rover and around four times better than either of the petrol models. Well, as long as you use the electric power, that is. According to Land Rover’s figures, when run solely on the petrol engine, the PHEV will only return around 25mpg.

Range Rover PHEV range

According to the latest testing, the PHEV will go 25 miles on electric power alone, which is a little less than its Volvo XC90 rival can manage, and some way off the latest BMW X5 xDrive45e's 54-mile figure.

Charge time

Charging the Range Rover at home from a standard three-pin socket will take about seven and a half hours. But if you use a home wallbox, you can drop that charge time to under three hours. Either way, it makes it easy to charge the car while it’s parked up overnight and have it fully charged for the morning commute. The car comes with just one charge cable – suitable for home use – as standard. So, you have to buy an extra cable, if you want to make use of a domestic wallbox or public charger.
