As well as receiving a new battery, the latest version of the Hyundai Ioniq Electric comes with an upgraded electric motor: this produces 134bhp, up from the 118bhp delivered by the pre-facelift version of the car.

Hyundai Ioniq Electric 0-62mph, top speed and acceleration

With that extra power at its disposal, 0-62mph is delivered in 9.7 seconds; half a second faster than the pre-facelift version of the Ioniq could manage. The top speed is down, however, falling from 103mph to 96mph. Typically for an electric car, the acceleration is best in the 0-30mph range before tailing off as the speed climbs. However, the level of shove at your disposal around town feels significant, and you won’t be left wanting for power when looking for overtaking gaps on the motorway.

Handling

The ride in the Ioniq Electric is generally very good, even on the UK's typically harsh roads. On the roughest surfaces, you will notice the car jiggle slightly, although the seats do a reasonable job of soaking up the vibrations. At motorway speeds, very little tyre or road noise makes its way into the car, but there’s a noticeable amount of wind noise when you approach 70mph. In corners, the Ioniq Electric resists the urge to lean heavily, thanks no doubt to the weighty, floor-mounted battery. But make no mistake, this is no sports car: there’s not much in the way of steering feel, although there's some satisfaction to be had flowing through corners.
