Ford Mondeo Hybrid (2014-2022) running costs, insurance, warranty & tax

The Ford Mondeo Hybrid is about average in terms of running costs

Overall rating

2.5 out of 5

Running costs & insurance rating

3.0 out of 5

Fuel Type:
Hybrid Petrol

When new, the Ford Mondeo Hybrid cost roughly the same as the equivalent diesel Mondeo, which made it a tempting proposition for some buyers.

Before late 2019, the Mondeo Hybrid came only in Titanium and Vignale trims, which are the two most expensive specification levels in the Mondeo range. However, revisions to the range towards the end of its life cycle meant newer trim levels included Zetec Edition, Titanium Edition, ST-Line Edition and Vignale, making it a slightly more appealing prospect for private buyers, due to a reduced entry-level price.

Where the Mondeo falls down is that its fuel-economy and emissions aren’t as impressive as any of those rivals, even the Toyota Prius. Whereas the Toyota's CO2 emissions are below 80g/km (even under the latest testing procedure), the Mondeo emits between 98 and 108g/km and its claimed fuel economy is just 59mpg. As a result, it’s not exempt from the London Congestion Charge.

Ford Mondeo Hybrid insurance group

The Mondeo Hybrid sits in insurance groups 21-24, which is pretty respectable within the range – on par with the equivalent diesel hatchback

Warranty

As with all Ford cars sold in the UK, the Mondeo Hybrid was covered by a three-year/60,000-mile warranty from new. That’s par for the course in this part of the market, but you'll get longer cover if you buy a Toyota, Hyundai or Kia.

Servicing

As it’s effectively a petrol-engined car, the Mondeo Hybrid needs servicing every year or 12,500 miles – whichever is sooner.

Road tax

Under the current road-tax regime, you’ll pay £145 a year for the Mondeo Hybrid after the first year, a saving of only £10 compared to the diesel. However, that’s no worse than in any of the Mondeo’s rivals. Fortunately, even the most expensive version of the Hybrid costs less than £40,000, so it's not liable for the £325 road-tax surcharge in years two to five.
