Volkswagen ID.3 facelift due in spring 2023

New sketches provide a glimpse at refreshed styling and cabin of Volkswagen’s electric family hatchback

Volkswagen has announced that the facelifted version of its ID.3 electric hatchback will be unveiled in spring 2023. The German brand also released some sketches and a handful of details about the refreshed ID.3 that hint at subtle updates to the car’s styling and cabin.

Based on the new sketches, it looks like the updated ID.3 will feature a more dynamic front bumper design with air intakes on either side of the central air intake, plus a slightly revised bonnet. The car’s headlights appear to have been tweaked, too, along with the LED taillights, though it looks like the rest of the ID.3 will remain largely unchanged.

The most significant changes will likely be made to the ID.3’s cabin, which was a frequent source of criticism with the existing model. As well as the use of more high-quality and partly sustainable materials inside, the refreshed dashboard will include a larger 12-inch central touchscreen that’ll come as standard – the same as the VW’s sister car, the Cupra Born, and an upgrade from the 10-inch display in the current ID.3.

The new screen will also be running an updated version of Volkswagen’s user interface and will be able to receive over-the-air updates. We’re told the optional Travel Assist semi-autonomous driving system and Park Assist Plus are getting some improvements, too, and it seems more than likely the updated ID.3 will feature a set of illuminated climate controls.

So far, Volkswagen has made no mention of upgrades for the ID.3’s range, charging speeds or efficiency, but earlier this year we learned that the ID.3 GTX hot hatch will arrive in conjunction with the electric hatchback’s mid-life facelift. We expect it’ll use the same 295bhp dual-motor setup as the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX SUVs.

According to Volkswagen, the development team behind the revamped ID.3 took suggestions from customers on what needed improvement. The brand’s board member for sales, marketing and after sales Imelda Labbé said: “The needs of our customers are always front and centre for us. That’s why we listen carefully and focus on gearing our product portfolio to their requirements.”

The exact date for the facelifted ID.3’s unveiling has yet to be announced, as is any UK pricing or specification information. Only one version of the ID.3 is currently available to order in the UK, with prices starting from just under £37,000 at the time of writing.

However, Volkswagen’s initial communication on the facelifted car mentions multiple trim levels, as well as the long-range Tour model, being available in Germany. Therefore, we expect more trim levels and battery sizes to be offered in the UK from 2023.

The ID.3 is currently produced in two facilities in Zwickau and Dresden, Germany, but from next year ID.3s will also be built at the main Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg in order to keep pace with high customer demand.
