The Niro’s stunning Driver Power customer satisfaction survey result in its debut year should make rivals sit up and take notice, while the Kia brand scored well overall, too. The car's Euro NCAP crash-test score (above) could be misleading as it's taken from a pre-facelift car that didn't have as much safety equipment included as standard. It was stated at the time of the tests that the Niro models complete with the safety equipment that is now included across the range would warrant a five star rating.
Kia Niro reliability & problems
The Niro seems unlikely to give owners much cause for concern, especially in the light of its amazing entry into our 2020 Driver Power survey. Both the Sportage and Niro were ranked in the top 10 best cars to own, while Kia as a brand was rated third overall.
With tried-and-tested technology in terms of engine and electronics, there’s no reason to expect problems with the hybrid’s battery or motor to reduce those satisfaction levels later on. And of course with a seven-year warranty tucked into their back pocket, owners have every right to be reassured about their purchase.
Every Niro gets autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance and traffic-sign recognition, the Kia gets everything you could want in terms of driver aids. Top-spec Niro 4s also get blind-spot monitoring.
In all other respects, the Niro does well on the safety front. It comes with all the usual systems like anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control, hill-start assistance and even lane-keeping assistance as standard on all trim levels. There are also seven airbags and ISOFIX child-seat points. It's a shame that you can't add a space-saver spare wheel, though; there's only room for a tyre repair kit under the boot floor.
