Hyundai Kona Electric running costs

Once the relatively high purchase price is covered, the Hyundai Kona Electric should be extremely cost-effective to run

Like all electric cars, the Kona Electric will be very cheap to run on an ongoing basis once you've got over the hurdle of the relatively high purchase (or monthly finance) cost.

However, the Kia e-Niro (which gets the same 64kWh battery and range) makes the Hyundai look a bit expensive if you factor in the e-Niro's generous equipment.

Still, it’s not as though the Kona is poorly equipped or requires a lot of options ticking. In fact, the Kona Electric is well equipped at all price points, and there’s not much else you can spend money on – apart from metallic or pearl paint and a funky two-tone roof.

Hyundai Kona Electric insurance group

The Premium and Premium SE versions of the Kona Electric are in insurance groups 26 and 27 respectively.

There’s an admirable five-year/unlimited-mileage warranty included with all new Hyundai cars, and the Kona Electric benefits from this, too. The eight-year/125,000-mile battery warranty is an added bonus.

We’re waiting to hear details of service costs for the Hyundai Kona Electric, but again they should be competitive, with all-inclusive deals available to help with the budgeting.

Road tax

There’s no road tax charge for vehicles with zero tailpipe emissions and the Kona Electric is also exempt from the London Congestion Charge until 2025.

With the standard Hyundai Kona line-up retaining up to 40% of its value after three years and 36,000 miles, owners of the Kona Electric should do at least as well according to our used-car experts.
