New electric GMC Hummer EV off-roader revealed
All-new electric version of the iconic 'Humvee' promises around 1,000bhp, a three-second 0-60mph time and formidable off-road capability
American truck brand GMC has taken the wraps off its new Hummer EV – a fully electric reimagining of the iconic, rugged military-derived Humvee off-road vehicle. Set to compete with the Rivian R1S and Tesla Cybertruck in the burgeoning electric 4x4 market, the Hummer EV will go into production in late 2021 at GMC's Detroit-Hamtramck factory, which has been repurposed for the production of electric cars.
GMC parent company General Motors has developed its own 'Ultium' electric drivetrain for this and other pure-electric models it plans in future. It's estimating a total power output for the Hummer EV of 1,000bhp, as well as over 15,500Nm of torque, from a three-motor setup. GMC estimates a 0-60mph time in the region of three seconds for the Hummer EV in its full-power driving mode.
Excellent off-road capability was a focus for the Hummer EV development team, and among its suite of all-terrain features is a four-wheel steering system with a 'CrabWalk' mode that allows the car to move diagonally at low speeds over challenging terrain.
Adaptive air suspension that allows ride-height adjustment, 35-inch Goodyear off-road tyres, a protected underbody, a series of ground-view cameras and a steady stream of information about torque output, tyre pressure and pitch/roll angles on the infotainment screen also aim to help the driver negotiate tough terrain.
The Hummer EV will be capable of rapid charging at speeds up to 350kW, while GMC reckons the 24-module battery pack will hold enough charge for an estimated 350-mile driving range before a top-up is needed. A 'Super Cruise' driver assistance system will also feature, promising "hands-free driving" on certain roads, as well as lane-changing assistance.
GMC's parent company General Motors pulled out of Europe in 2018, so we don’t expect the Hummer to be officially sold in the UK any time soon. However, like its predecessor, importing one from the States should be possible.
