BMW 225xe iPerformance running costs

The BMW 225xe will be one of the cheapest MPVs to run – as long as you can use electric power frequently

If you’re looking through the 2 Series Active Tourer range, you can’t fail to notice that the 225xe is one of the most expensive versions of the car. But if you compare it to its rivals, it’s about the same as the plug-in hybrid version of the Audi A3 Sportback. And whichever version of the BMW you’re interested in, every model averages 113mpg and emits 57g/km of CO2.

BMW 225xe insurance group

The BMW 2 Series range is ranked in insurance groups 11 to 23. However, this hybrid version sits at the very top of that range in group 23. That puts it three groups higher than the petrol 220i and two groups above the top 220d diesel, as well as in a much higher group than the Toyota Prius+.

Warranty

BMW provides a three-year/unlimited-mileage warranty on all its cars. That’s almost exactly the same as you’ll get on a Mercedes or Audi, but lags behind some rivals. The rather less expensive Kia and Hyundai equivalents, for example, come with much longer warranties.

Servicing

Compared to other BMWs, the 2 Series looks quite cheap to service – particularly if you take out the BMW i Service Inclusive package, which costs just under £300. For that one-off fee, this covers you for three years and 36,000 miles. Otherwise, as with all BMWs, the 2 Series has condition-based servicing. In other words, how often it needs servicing depends on how it’s driven.

Road tax

After the first year's CO2-based road tax, which is generally included in the on-the-road price, the 2 Series iPerformance Active Tourer costs £130 a year to tax. However, if you buy one of these models, you should be careful that you don’t pile on enough options to push the list price beyond £40,000, as that'll bump up your annual road tax bill by £310.

Depreciation

Despite the fact that this hybrid version of the 2 Series Active Tourer is one of the most expensive in the range, it’s forecast to be one of the best at holding its value. In fact, it should retain a similar proportion of its new value (just over 40%) to the Audi A3 Sportback, although not as much as the Toyota Prius.
